Learn French with Comedy

April 26th, 2012 France and French !

Last week in my B2 standard French course, my teacher introduced the class to one of the most famous French comedians and actors of the 70′s and 80′s: Michel Colucci, better known as “Coluche.” We watched a few of his stand-up routines and then read the transcripts to varify our comprehension. Watching comedy skits is a fun way to learn French and to learn about French culture. Here’s a brief biography on this iconic French comedian:

Colucci was born on October 28th, 1944 in Paris, France. His father was originally from Lazio, Italy and was a painter. His mother worked as a florist. Colucci had a difficult childhood due to the early death of his father which left his mother to raise two children on her own. In his early twenties Colucci began singing in cafes but soon gave it up and turned to comedy.

His career took off as a comedian at the age of 26 when he adopted the name “Coluche” and stated to sport his trademark outfit which consisted of blue striped overalls and a yellow t-shirt. He was known for his blunt, sarcastic and oftentimes vulgar routines. He was fired by two radio stations for his vulgarity.

He married Véronique Kantor in 1975 and together they had 2 sons. In 1980 Coluche announced his intent to run for President and polls showed he had 15% of the vote. He withdrew his candidacy after receiving pressure and criticism from his opponents. In 1985 he started the “Restos du cœur” charity which still today distributes hot meals and food packages to the needy.

Coluche appeared in 15 films and won the César Award for Best Actor for his role in Tchao pantin.

Coluche died at the young age of 41 when his motorcycle crashed into a truck in Opio, France.

Watching Coluche skits is a great learning tool for those intermediate French learners out there.

Below are a couple of his more well-known stand-up routines. Let us know what you think in the comment section.

Her Serene Highness

As I was doing a little research on the subject of today’s article, I could not help but notice the similarities between us.  Why, she was an east coast American, just like me! She lived in the French Riviera, just like me! She held dual citizenship with a European nation, just like me! Sure, she [...]

Culture Shock in France

I’m someone who travels quite a bit, having lived in South America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia for most of the last several years, and I have always enjoyed learning about different cultures along the way. After all that more “exotic” travel, you can imagine how I let myself believe that moving to France would [...]
